In a 60' documentary our reporter, Sanjiv Bhattacharya, goes in search of 49 year old Warren Jeffs; a wanted man who has a reported 80 wives and over 250 children - a self pro-claimed prophet and president of the 12,000 member Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (FLDS). Jeffs is up on civil charges for the molestation of his nephew and is also embroiled in a class action case brought by the so-called Lost Boys of Colorado City/Hildale. Jeffs went on the run about 2 months ago - the reward has been set at $10,000, even the FBI are trying to track him down. No one knows of Jeffs' whereabouts and it's not for want of trying. |
Sanjiv's search would start in Jeffs' home town Short Creek, in Colorado City, USA (only 3 hours drive from Las Vegas). The journey involves Sanjiv talking to countless characters and unearths this strange and rather freakish world - making The Man with 80 Wives compelling, must-see headline-grabbing television.
Short Creek is the only place in America that is populated entirely by a cult: a notoriously secretive sect where 12,000 polygamists live (there are an estimated 30,000 polygamists throughout the US). FLDS members believe not only that plural marriage is the one sure path to heaven, but also that outsiders cannot be trusted – they also believe that it's OK to murder should God desire it!
Under Jeffs' reign, television, newspapers and magazines are banned, and music is prohibited, as is the colour red and all competitive sports…and black people….and that's just for starters…. |
