9/11: Millionaire Widows
Channel 4 - 6th September 2006 9-10pm

Billions of dollars of compensation were handed out to the relatives of victims of the 9/11 tragedy and many grieving widows became multi millionaires overnight. This money was meant to ease the suffering and help heal the devastation left in the wake of the terror attacks, but for many it has been anything but compensation. It has actually ruined their lives for a second time.

In a controversial move, anyone accepting the compensation had to waive their right to sue for negligence.

Some have found themselves under pressure from their family to accept the money rather than pursue independent civil cases. Others have been criticised for flaunting their new wealth.

Filmed entirely in New York, this emotive documentary charts the lives of one broken family torn apart by greed, a single mother's desperate fight for recognition, a woman's battle with her partner's family who viewed the disaster as a financial windfall, and a scorned ex-wife, whose fire-fighter husband left her for the newly rich widow of his dead colleague.

In a series of emotional testimonies, news footage and personal archive, the programme recounts the poignant stories of those who blame compensation for their continued suffering.
